Yoga has its seed in the beginning of time, yet it still continues to evolve. Inspired from the dept of nature, it is a life and breathing art. The term ‘yoga’ derived from Sanskrit means ‘union’ and is the union of our physical, mental and spiritual selves. It is just not an exercise – it is a way of life.
There are several different paths of yoga and each one takes a different route to approach one ultimate goal of self-realization.
The six main paths of yoga are:
Jnana yoga – This is the path of wisdom and is most suited to people with an intellectual temperament.
Bhakti yoga – This is the path of devotion and is most suited to people who are attracted to prayer.
Karma yoga – This is the path in which the practitioner devotes his or her life to selfless action.
Mantra – This is the path of sacred sound. Sacred sound, phrases and words known as mantras are repeated and bring self – realization.
Raja – Raja means ‘Royal’. This is an eight-step path to enlightenment and practice of posture, breath control, meditation and withdrawal of the senses.
Hatha – This is the path of physical control and is properly regarded as preparation for the pursuit of Raja yoga. It is a disciplined science encompassing all aspects of life in different ways and on different levels to balance the mind, body and spirit leading ultimately to perfect health.
