The Health Benefits of Spas

The Health Benefits of Spas

Why do we use spas? Is it the blissed out sense of total relaxation and harmony we feel after a day of treatments? Is it because of the vibrant glow imbued upon our skin as it is cleansed of toxins? Maybe it is simply a social outing, a place where we can get away from it all and enjoy some quality time with friends. Whatever your motivations for visiting a spa you can be sure that you will be on the receiving end of a number of real health benefits as well as cosmetic changes.

First and foremost, spas have the ability to reduce stress. Stress is a major cause of illness in the UK, both unto itself, and as a precursor to other conditions. Far from being just a psychological condition, stress can negatively influence physical processes in the body. Stress produces the hormone cortisol which can lead to lethargy, weight gain, hair loss and depression, there are many ways to combat stress and a day in a spa is as good a weapon as any.

The calming, haven-like environment of a spa will kick-start the heeling process, the sights, sounds and smells are all designed to put the body and mind at ease. A simple procedure like a massage will reduce stress by draining tired muscles of lactic acid and stimulating circulation around the body, actively transporting nutrients and restorative white blood cells to the areas that need them most.

High pressure jets in the Jacuzzis and mineral baths have a similar effect, gently soothing overworked tissue. Saunas and steam rooms also have a detoxifying effect, opening pores and draining the body of excess toxins, just remember to drink water regularly to avoid dehydration. These are just a few of the myriad internal and external health benefits  spa breaks can provide. If you feel overworked, stressed and in need of some ‘me’ time, get to a spa, stat!
